CREATING A SPAM FILTER IN APPLE MAILER 10.2.6

This document describes how to create spam filters in Apple Mailer 10.2.6. These filters will recognize a variety of spam mail and transfer that mail to a spam mailbox created by you. Before using this document, please read the general discussion on. Most images are from Apple Mailer running Os 10.2.6

Creating a spam mailbox

Before making any filters, you need to create a mailbox to hold spam until you have a chance to review its contents. While it is possible to create a filter that simply deletes anything that may be spam, this is not recommended as you may inadvertently delete mail you want to keep. Instead, you will filter the probable spam into a separate mailbox and review or delete at your convenience.
From the main Apple Mailer 10.2.6 window, select the "Mailbox" menu, then click "New Mailbox"
A new window will open. Type "Spam Filter" (without quotes) into the space provided.

Click OK

Creating a "route" spam filter

Now that you have created your spam mailbox, you may make the filter that will catch a broad array of spam and send it to that mailbox. This is a filter that catches email containing anti-spam headers which we has added based on the route the message has followed through the Internet on its path to you.

Open Apple Mailer's filter window by clicking the MAIL menu, JUNK MAIL and selecting "Custom".

Click the "Add Rule" button on left side of the rule window.

Type "Spam Assassin" on Description, choose "<Any Header>" in the the Header drop-down menu and select "Edit Header List".

Type "X-Spam-Status" in Header's field then click Add Header and OK (this is part of the anti-spam header added by Internet Channel 's mail server).

Now, you can select "X-Spam-Status", "contains" and type "Yes"
Skip to the "Perform the following actions:" section and choose "Transfer Message" from that drop-down menu. Select Spam filter

Click OK
