CREATING A SPAM FILTER IN EUDORA

This document describes how to create spam filters in Eudora. These filters will recognize a variety of spam mail and transfer that mail to a spam mailbox created by you. Before using this document, please read the general discussion on. This document is for both Windows and Macintosh. Most images are from a Macintosh version of Eudora but look very much like what Macintosh users see differences are noted.

Creating a spam mailbox

Before making any filters, you need to create a mailbox to hold spam until you have a chance to review its contents. While it is possible to create a filter that simply deletes anything that may be spam, this is not recommended as you may inadvertently delete mail you want to keep. Instead, you will filter the probable spam into a separate mailbox and review or delete at your convenience.
From the main Eudora window, select the "Mailbox" menu, then click "New..."
A new window will open. Type "Spam" (without quotes) into the space provided. The "Make it a folder" box should not be checked.

Click OK

Creating a "route" spam filter

Now that you have created your spam mailbox, you may make the filter that will catch a broad array of spam and send it to that mailbox. This is a filter that catches email containing anti-spam headers which we has added based on the route the message has followed through the Internet on its path to you.
Windows users:
Open Eudora's filter window by clicking the Tools menu and selecting "Filters".

Mac Users:
Open Eudora's filter window by clicking the Windows menu and selecting "Filters".

The numbers on the following figure correspond to the steps outlined below.

  1. Click the "New" button in the bottom left corner of the filter window.
  2. Make sure that "Incoming" and "Manual" are both checked at the top of the window.
  3. Choose "<Any Header>" in the the Header drop-down menu.
  4. The white box below and to the left of the Header drop-down menu should say "appears".
  5. Type "X-spam-Status: Yes" (without the quotes) in the white box below and to the right of the Header drop-down menu (this is part of the anti-spam header added by Internet Channel 's mail server).
  6. "ignore" should appear in the next space down.
  7. Skip to the "Action" section and choose "Transfer To" from that drop-down menu. This will create a button to the right that lists the "In" box by default.
  8. Click the "In" button and choose the "Spam" mailbox that you created earlier.
  9. Close the Filters window and save the changes when prompted to do so.

Bypassing filters

It is possible that a filter may move legitimate mail into your spam mailbox. Let's assume that something about mail from your Eudora News mailing list triggers the Internet Channel mail server to add anti-spam headers to those messages. To bypass the filter, create an exception:

Click the Tools menu and select "Filters"

  1. In the middle of the match section, change "ignore" to "unless".
  2. From the second Header drop-down menu, choose "From".
  3. The white box below and to the left of the second Header drop-down menu should say "contains".
  4. Enter the email address that should be excluded from the filter
    (pete@moss.net in this example).

Disabling filters

To disable a filter, open the Filters window and click on the name of the filter you want to disable (from the list on the left portion of the screen). Remove the check mark next to the word "Incoming" at the top of the screen. Close the Filters window and save the changes when prompted to do so.
