2. Setting up Dial-Up Networking

Click on the My Computer icon and then click on Dial-Up Networking. It should look like the window to the right.

Double-click the Make New Connection icon.

You can type any name you wish in the first field. We suggest something along the lines of "Inch."

Make sure the select a modem box shows the correct modem.

Click the Next button.

Type in the area code and the phone number in the appropriate fields.

Personal dial-up accounts will usually dial in to (212) 796-4624.

Make sure the country code is set to USA.

Click the Next button.

Click here if you are calling from the 516, 914 or 201 area codes.

This screen is the final confirmation screen.

When you click the Finish button, a new icon will be created in the Dial-up Networking folder.

Click once on the new icon with the RIGHT mouse button and a small menu will pop up. At the bottom of the menu you will see Properties. Choose Properties with the LEFT mouse button. screen shot
After clicking on Properties, you will see a screen like this.

If not, close this screen and go back one step, making sure to click on the connection icon with the RIGHT mouse button.

The Use country code and area code should be checked ®

Continue by clicking on the Configure button.

The Type of Dial-Up Server should read PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet.

None of the Advanced options boxes should be checked.

Only TCP/IP should be checked in the Allowed network protocols section, unless you are on a network and have been told otherwise by the network administrator.

Click the TCP/IP Settings button. ®

Click the Server assigned IP address radio button. It does not matter if there are numbers in the grayed-out boxes.

Click Specify name server addresses. In the Primary DNS field, enter 216.223.200.14.

In the Secondary DNS field, enter 216.223.192.21.

The WINS fields should be 0.0.0.0.

Check the two boxes at the bottom.

Use IP header compression ®
Use default gateway on remote network ®

You are now finished setting up Dial-Up Networking.

To connect to INCH, just click on the icon for INCH in the Dial-Up Networking folder. You will be prompted for your username and password; Type these in and then click on the Connect button. After a few moment you should be connected to INCH. Congratulations!
