Notes on early Pennys in Suffolk County, NY
1. Capt. John Penny of the Rowbuck 2. John Pinny, the Southampton blacksmith 3. John Penny, the Southhold tanner d. Feb 14, 1713/14 4. Edward Penny d. 1726/27 of East Hampton
Capt. John Penny of the Rowbuck Virginia Wines, in her book Pioneers of Riverhead Town, has caused much confusion in the study of the early Suffolk County, NY Penny/Penney Family. Ms. Wines gathered much valuable Penny information in one place but she did a very careless job of assembling the information into reasonable relationships. I believe that her "Capt. John Penny" is an amalgam of at least three persons: Capt. Penny of the Rowbuck who had a lawsuit against Lion Gardiner, John Pinney, the Southampton smith, who removed to Carolina, and John Penny, the Southold tanner. Reading the court records of Capt. Penny's suit, he does not seem like a local person. As sea captain in 1659, at the time of the Gardiner incident, he probably was at least 30 years old. If so, he would be born before 1630 or almost 90 years old when Virginia Wines would have him father Freelove in 1712.
John Pinny, the Southampton blacksmith I speculate that John Pinny was born before 1667 because I presume he was at least 18 years old when he was asked to come to Southampton as a smith in 1685. In 1701 and 1709, transactions are made in Southampton on behalf of John Pinney, smith of Carolina. In all transactions in the Southampton town records, the name is spelled consistently with the letter i after the initial letter P. John Pinney is listed as smith from 1685 to 1709 (24 years). He removed to Carolina about 1698. In 1701 and 1709 He is living in Carolina and selling property in Southampton to pay of his debts. There is some confusion between this person and John Penny, the Southold Tanner who in 1711/12 that purchased a substantial lot in Aquebogue. It seems unlikely that this is same person. On page 486 of the 1989 Heritage Books facsimile reprint of, George Rogers Howell’s 1887 Early History of Southampton, L.I., New York, there is a paragraph about John Penny. "86. Penney, John, mentioned 1729 as having w. Juda and ch. Robert and Christopher who removed to South Carolina. John is on the list of 1794 and in 1696 sells his homestead." (The 16 in 1696 is crossed out by hand and an illegible number, possibly 1730 or 1780, is written by hand to the right of the word homestead). John Pinny, above, is on the list of "1694" and gives Samuel Cooper power of attorney to sell his homestead in 1696/97. John Pinny; married Juda (--?--);
Following is a transcription of Suffolk County records, taken from Pioneers of Riverhead Town, by Virginia Wines, Published by the Suffolk County Historical Society, 1981
I am in possession of a photocopy of a 1711 map of Charleston S.C which shows the name Penny in New London Parish. This is a possibly John Pinny the Southampton Blacksmith but perhaps a coincidence.
John Penny, Southhold tanner The first time we hear of John Penny, the Southhold tanner, is in 1711/12 when he purchased land on the west side of West Lane, in Aquebogue, from Israel Parshall. This was a large parcel, at "Acquabaucke and bounded North by ye Sound, East by David Parshall, South by an East and West line run from ye springs at ye head of Vails Meadow to ye land of Joseph Reeve, and West by Simon Ramsey and Joseph Reeve, excepting a highway two poles wide ... on the East side of ye sd land." (Southold Town Records, Vol. 11, p. 348) The Salmon Records notes the death of John Penny on February 14, 1713/14 and the death of Mary Penny, widow, on March 31, 1733. Salmon records. (Salmon Records are a private register of marriages and deaths of residents of the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, New York, or of persons more or less closely associated with that place.) For John Penny, the tanner of Southold, his name is consistently spelled with an e after the initial letter P. Ms Wines notes in her book that: "When the census of Suffolk County was taken in 1776, William Penny, over 50, and with a male under 16 and a female above 16, was still living on the Penny farm, as his name appears between Hezekiah Reeve and Moses Simon, his West Lane neighbors. His family of three was listed in the Aquebogue District of Southold on the census enumerated August 22, 1778 by Daniel and Jeremiah Wells."

Mary Penny; born before 1713 (1713 is the date of her father's death); married Daniel Youngs, son of Christopher Youngs and Elizabeth Moore, Oct 16, 1732 (Robbins, Salmon Records.); died Jun 8, 1798 at AE 81. She 'This Mary may have married Oct 16, 1732 Daniel Young and been the mother of Rev. Daniel Young of Aquebogue. The widow of Daniel (1712-1755) died June 8, at the age of 81 and it seems likely that she was the infant Mary baptized in 1718.' V. Wines, Pioneers of Riverhead Town, p.30-1. Children of Mary Penny and Daniel Youngs all born at Aquebogue, Suffolk, NY, were as follows: i. Rachael Youngs; married Dea. 4. William Penny; born 1700; born between 1705 and 1707; married Sarah Howell, daughter of Richard Howell Jr. and Deborah (--?--), Jan 13, 1731 (Robbins, Salmon Records, p. 80.); died Mar 19, 1781 (Robbins, Salmon Records.). Virginia Wines wrote: "Willi," the only Penny who contributed towards the first meeting house, "workt" upon the timber the year before his marriage January 13, 1732 and it can be assumed that he was still living in 1731, with the family on the large parcel of land which stretched from present-day Aquebogue to the Sound, on the west side of West Lane. His father was probably John Penny, the Penny pioneer on the North Fork, who had purchased this tract in 1711/12. A part of the farm, on which the original Penny house was located, was later owned by Daniel Terry (1783-1849). When the census of Suffolk County was taken in 1776, William Penny, over 50, and with a male under 16 and a female above 16, was still living on the Penny farm, as his name appears between Hezekiah Reeve and Moses Simon, his West Lane neighbors. His family of three was listed in the Aquebogue District of Southold on the census enumerated August 22, 1778 by Daniel and Jeremiah Wells. (Wines, Pioneers of Riverhead, p.27.). 1776 census of Suffolk County, P. 15 Southold
Children of William Penny and Sarah Howell were as follows: i. (--?--) Penny; born before 1738; died Aug 5, 1738 (Robbins, Salmon Records, p. 23.). ii. Possibly William Penney; born 1739 at Suffolk Co., NY; born 1742; married Abigail Downs, daughter of John Downs and Margaret Howell, 1770 (David George, editor Penney, Penn(e)y Connection Vol.3, No.1 (May 1, 1985): p.14.); married Esther Dickenson. From a muster roll of the men raised and passed muster in the County of Suffolk, 1759, under Capt. Stephen Sayre: William Penny, April 9th, age 17 (b.1742), born Suffolk Co., Trade - joyner. Mustered out of the company of Capt. Dl. Wells. See: 'Some Records of the French & Indian War,' NYGBS Record, v.26, pp.73-79. There is no William Penny on the 1790 or 1800 census of Suffolk Co. Perhaps he removed to Orange County at this time. (Is this the William Penny that married Abigail Downs?) in 1759. 1776 census of Suffolk County, P. 21 Southold
There is no William Penny on the 1790 or 1800 census of Suffolk Co, NY. iii. Possibly John Penny; born 1744 (New York Historical Society, Muster Rolls of New York Provincial Troops (1891; reprint Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, Inc, 1990).). He was Carpenter (Ibid.). He Muster roll of Capt. Griffin's Company, Suffolk County, July 1, 1762: John Penny; date of inlistment, May 3; age 18 (b.1744); born Suffolk Co.; trade, Carpenter; stature, 5'-6'. (Ibid.). iv. (--?--) Penny; born 1748; died Dec 24, 1748 (Robbins, Salmon Records.).
Edward Penny d. 1726/27 of East Hampton I have not found any solid evidence to prove that Edward is the son of either the Southold Tanner or the Southampton blacksmith although both remain a possibility. If Edward was the son of the Southold tanner, then why did he live in East Hampton. His widow and children moved to Southold after his death when his widow married Henry Wells of Southold. 1. Edward Penny was born circa 1698 (Birthate is a guess saying that he was 20 years old when he had his first child). He married Katherine (--?--). He died on 13 Feb 1726/27 (Huntting, Rev. Nathaniel, Records of Baptisms, Marriages, Deaths and Church Membership. Included in _The Records of the Town of East-Hampton_, vol. 5. NYGBS.). Huntting's East Hampton church on 23 Feb 1728/9 and married Henry Wells in Southold in 1734 (Salmon). Children of Edward Penny and Katherine (--?--) were as follows:
