Jennifer Penney, <penney@melbpc.org.au>
Mordialloc, Victoria, Australia
I have researched a branch of the Penney family in Australia.
Thomas Penney married Mary BIDDER in Devon abt 1832. They migrated
to Canada in abt 1842. Mary and five of her six children arrived in
Melbourne, Australia in 1853. I haven't found Thomas or the eldest son,
Samuel. Samuel was alive at the time of the death of his mother in 1892
but doesn't seem to be in Australia.
Thomas was a tanner by trade. He would have been born abt 1805.
Could he be a long-lost relative? I know nothing else about him, but would
love to be able to trace back further.

I am related to George Penney of Berry Pomeroy Estate, Devonshire. George
was born about 1680 and married Joan Hanover in 1714. Their Grandson
John Penney (f. Henry m. Eleanor) emigrated to America. My Great
Great Grandfather John Kemp Penney emigrated to South Australia in the
1830's.

I am a descendant (and have information of other descendants) of Albert Edward PENNY, son of
George Penny (a plough man) and Prudence Annie Lawes. Albert was born on 24 January 1865 in
Teffont Magna, Wiltshire, England and migrated to Australia on 7 July 1883. Albert had at least
one sister, named Sarah Ann Penny, and a brother (name unknown). This brother is supposed to have
migrated to America. Albert settled in Mackay, Queensland, Australia.
He married Elizabeth Ann (Lizzie) Davis on 26 November 1887 in Walkerston, Queensland, Australia.
Albert and Elizabeth Penny had eight children: Susan Annie, Ada May, Eliza Agnes, George
Alfred, Lizzie, Ethel Blanche, Charles and Henry Albert (Harry).
Henry Albert Penny is my paternal grandfather.

My great grandfather Moses Penny was born in the general area of Conception Bay, Newfoundland in
1865. His wife Janet Randell was born in Nippers Harbor Newfoundland in the same year. They were
married in Nippers Harbor and had three children there before immigrating to upper Michigan where
he worked in the copper mines. After a short time they moved to Butte, Montana where he worked in
the copper mines. He and Janet are buried in Butte. I have determined and located all descendants
of these two people. I spent two weeks in Newfoundland in 1998 traveling and researching the family
name. I was able to come up with very interesting information. Unfortunately I was not able to
determine exactly where Moses was born or who his father or mother was. I have some clues but have
been unable to determine any details or confirmation. Do you have any information in this regard or
know of any sources that I might pursue?

I am looking for information about my great-great-grandfather Charles Penney, and his
family. He married Martha Ann Quanby and they had two daughters, Sarah and my
great-grandmother Lois who was born in 1853. On her birth certificate it says Charles
was a basket maker and he lived in Water Newton. Charles possibly has connections in the
Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, Leicestershire areas of the U.K. I don't have any further
about Charles Penney but I know plenty about his daughter Lois!

Mu husband is descended from the PENNY family of Folkestone, Kent (18/19c).
I would be delighted to hear from anybody else researching PENNY in this area.
Donald Singer <KYYB34A@prodigy.com>
My name is Donald Singer and I am trying to do research on my Great
Grandfather - Thomas Penny, b. 1832 in England. At some point he
immigrated to Canada and married Elizabeth Scott of Peebleshire,
Scotland. They had a son, James Penny, born in Ontario in 1865. I
have been able to trace Elizabeth Scott's family to the 1600s in
Scotland through old parish records, but cannot find a link for
Thomas Penny. I do not know if they married before they left Great
Britain or after they arrived in Canada. The family eventually moved
to Michigan and all three are buried in Linden, MI. I realize this
is scanty information, but if you have anything to add I would really
appreciate hearing from you. I did try to subscribe to the Penny
Connection, but as you said it is apparently no longer in publication.
I was in Michigan last week and did some follow-up work on my great grandfather, Thomas Penny, and found
his parents names: William Penney and Dinna Towel, both of England.
This is the first change in spelling of Penny I've seen and the first
time I have come across Dinna Towel. Her name seems very unusual and
I would guess was probably spelled phonetically in the records; or
her full name was probably Edwina or some derivation. There was
still no mention of which county in England they lived in and this is
my next big hurdle; along with finding when and where Thomas Penny
married Elizabeth Scott (of Peebleshire, Scotland).
