I am doing research on Thomas S. Penney born July 30, 1845 in Illinois and died November 4, 1888 in Iowa. He married Lucinda Deveraux (born March 29, 1854 in New York and died April 8, 1919 in Iowa) on September 21, 1873 in Illinois. Thomas S. Penney was a Union soldier from Illinois in the Civil War.

I am interested in finding Thomas S. Penney's ancestors. Any information or suggestions would be helpful.

NEW YORK

I just came across your web page. My gr-gr-gr-gr-grandmother was Deborah Penny, born Dec 21, 1791 in Bridgehampton, Suffolk County, NY, died Jan 8, 1877, Sag Harbor. She married John Edwards. A family photograph we have of her is the same photograph that appears in the book "Foster-Penny-Squire Families" by Alonzo Foster. I have a web-page that has the little bit of information I know about her. The URL is http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/8663/

I've been searching for the ancestors of my grandfather for several years with no luck. His name was Eugene Buck Penny, born 10 May 1857 in New York, and died 22 Nov 1911 in Alabama. A 1900 Jefferson Co., AL census states that Eugene and his parents were born in New York. He had a brother named William, also born in NY in 1859. I have corresponded with the Suffolk Co. Historical Society, but they were not able to find Eugene in their records. I have not been able to determine where in NY he was born, possibly in NY City. I have also corresponded with NYC Dept of Records to ask for a search of Manhattan, but no results again. I tried to secure a death certificate, but there was not one on file.

NORTH CAROLINA

For about a decade I have been researching the David Reese family that settled in Mecklenburg County, N.C., in the second half of the 18th century, and have done some original research in the line (some of the Reese family histories have quite a bit wrong about this line). One of the new links I found was that the oldest daughter of David Reese married a John Penny probably in Mecklenburg County.

Margaret would probably been born in 1740. I have no information about John Penny, and wonder if you have any knowledge of this Penny line. The Reeses were staunch Presbyterians and I suspect Penny was too.

SOUTH CAROLINA

My side of the Penneys hail from Abbeville, South Carolina. My father's name is David Emory Penney III. He is a mathematician at the University of Georgia. He has one sister, Ann Penney Coonley, who resides in Connecticut.
His father, David Emory Penney Jr., was an electrical engineer with Southern Bell. Born and raised in Abbeville, he graduated from Clemson College and worked in the Army as a telephone engineer in the Phillipines during World War 2. He retired to Ormond Beach, FL, where he lived until he passed away last year. He had a half sister, Ethel Whitmire.

My great-grandfather was also from Abbeville. He was a railroad engineer.

My great-great-grandfather's name was Andrew Jasper Penney. I have a more detailed geneology somewhere in my files. I understand that the first Penney came to America as a cabin boy from Scotland in the 1600's.
