Toothed Whales (suborder odonteceti)

SPERM WHALE (Physeter macrocephalus) — The sperm whale is the only large whale with 46 teeth on the lower jaw only. It can grow up to 60 feet long and weigh 63 tons. It feeds on small fish, squid and the giant squid, and can remain submerged for 90 minutes in search of prey.

Sperm whales are spread throughout the oceans as they follow their food supply (They prefer deep water over 600 feet). In the summer they are found in the colder seas, and in winter, the temperate oceans.

In its massive head is a large reservoir of spermaceti, a waxy substance that was used to make candles. The average sperm whale yielded 45 barrels of oil and (tk) barrels of spermaceti
